AEO in plain English
Traditional SEO asks: how do I rank on page one of Google? AEO asks a related but different question: how do I become the business an AI system mentions when someone asks who to use?
That means your content needs to answer questions directly, your business facts need to be consistent everywhere they appear online, and your site needs structured data that tells search engines exactly what you do, where you work and how to contact you. None of this is new technology you bolt on. It is mostly doing the fundamentals properly, in a format AI systems can parse.
How AEO relates to SEO
The good news for anyone already investing in SEO is that AEO overlaps heavily with it. The pages that rank well organically tend to be the same pages AI systems draw from: clear headings, specific answers, genuine expertise, and content that matches what people actually search.
Where AEO adds emphasis is on quotability. A paragraph buried in marketing fluff is harder for an AI to extract than a direct 50-word answer under a question-shaped heading. Schema markup that confirms your services, locations and contact details gives AI systems something reliable to cite instead of guessing from scattered directory listings.
Why local businesses should pay attention
AI search is not only for national brands or tech companies. When someone asks "who is a good plumber near me?" or "which accountant handles VAT for small businesses in Leeds?", the answer may come from an AI summary rather than ten blue links. If your business is not represented clearly online, you simply will not appear in that answer.
For local service businesses, the practical stakes are familiar: missed calls, lost enquiries, competitors named instead of you. AEO does not change what customers want. It changes where they look first, and how the answer gets assembled before they ever click a website.
What AEO is not
Honesty matters here, because the term attracts bad advice. AEO is not:
- A separate channel you can buy like ads, with instant guaranteed citations.
- A trick to fool AI into recommending you regardless of quality or relevance.
- Something that works without the underlying SEO foundations: reviews, citations, content and a usable website.
- A reason to rewrite your entire site in robotic FAQ format overnight.
Where to start
Businesses that treat AEO as a quick overlay on a weak site will be disappointed. Those already doing SEO properly often find they are further along than they realised. Start with the questions your customers actually ask, then check whether your site answers them plainly on dedicated pages. Audit your Google Business Profile, schema markup and directory listings for consistency. Fix anything contradictory before you write new content.
