What you can do with no website at all
- Create and verify a Google Business Profile, which puts you on Google Maps and in local search results.
- List your services individually, so you appear for specific searches rather than only your business name.
- Set a service area if you travel to customers, and hide your address — the correct setup for most trades.
- Collect Google reviews, which are the strongest thing you have without a site.
- Add photos of real work, which for trades does more persuading than any amount of copy.
- Take enquiries by phone or the profile's message function, and share your review link directly with customers.
Where the ceiling is
Two things are hard without a website. The first is corroboration: Google cross-checks a listing against other sources, and a business with a site that matches its profile is easier to trust than one with nothing to check against. That does not stop you ranking, but it makes it harder in a competitive town.
The second is the searches that are not “near me”. Specific service questions — what a job involves, what affects the price, whether you cover a particular area — are answered by pages, and without any you simply cannot appear for them. A profile wins the map pack; pages win everything underneath it.
The smallest website worth having
If you do add a site, it does not need to be big. A handful of pages that load fast on a phone, with your services, the areas you cover, your number one tap away and the same business name and phone as your profile, does almost all of the work. What matters far more than size is that the details match the listing exactly.
An old site nobody has touched in five years, with a phone number you no longer use, is worse than no site at all — it actively contradicts your profile. If that is your situation, either fix it or take it down.
Social media is not a substitute
A Facebook or Instagram page is worth having and it is not a website. It rarely ranks for the local searches that bring strangers, you do not control it, and it does not corroborate your Google listing in the way your own site does.
The order that works for most businesses with nothing: get the Google Business Profile verified and collecting reviews first, use social for the customers you already have, and add a small site once the enquiries justify it.
