Google Ads vs SEO for Opticians

Azizi TechnologiesPublished 5 min read

An independent optician is unlikely to win a bidding war against national chains with far larger ad budgets. The map pack is a different contest, decided by profile completeness, reviews and proximity rather than spend — and it is where independents beat chain branch listings regularly.

For most trades this comparison is a straight speed-versus-durability question. For independent opticians there is a second factor that changes the answer: you are competing against national chains whose advertising budgets you cannot match.

We do not sell Google Ads — we do local SEO — so treat the following as a case that names its own bias. It also names the cases where ads are worth your money.

The auction is the one contest you cannot win on budget

Google Ads is an auction. A national chain can sustain a bid on “opticians near me” across every town in the country as a line in a marketing budget; an independent practice pays the same rate out of one shop's takings. On the terms with the most competition, that is not a fight worth picking.

The map pack works differently. Google ranks each location as its own business, weighing relevance, distance and prominence rather than spend. A chain branch profile is typically a template with thin reviews and stock photos — which is precisely why a well-run independent can and does outrank them locally.

Where ads still make sense for an independent practice

  • A new practice or a new owner, with no review history for Google to weigh yet.
  • A specific high-value line where the margin justifies the click — specialist lenses, myopia management, particular frame ranges the chains do not stock.
  • A short seasonal push, where you want visibility for a defined few weeks rather than permanently.
  • Narrow, specific terms rather than the head term: bidding on “varifocal specialist [town]” is a very different proposition from bidding on “opticians near me”.

The searches the chains leave alone

NHS eye tests are the clearest example. “NHS eye test near me” and “free eye test [town]” carry real demand and are poorly served, and if you provide NHS sight tests you can win them with a page and a profile entry rather than a budget.

Urgent eye problems are similar. A practice taking part in a local minor eye conditions service, saying so clearly, captures searches that otherwise go to A&E or default to a chain — and those patients frequently stay for routine care afterwards.

These are the searches where an independent has a genuine structural advantage, and they are earned rather than bought.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Straight answers, no small print. If yours isn’t here, ask — you’ll get the same plain English.

Do you manage Google Ads for opticians?

No, we do local SEO only. If your situation calls for ads we will say so and you will need another supplier — which is also why we can tell you plainly that the head terms are a poor auction for an independent.

Can we really outrank Specsavers without paying?

In the map results, regularly. Those are ranked per branch on relevance, distance and prominence rather than budget, and chain branch profiles are usually thin. In the paid results above them, no — that is a budget contest.

Is it worth bidding on our own practice name?

Sometimes, if a competitor is bidding on it and taking clicks that would have been yours. Check first whether anyone actually is, because otherwise you are paying for traffic that would have arrived free.

What should an independent do first?

The free work: primary category, itemised services including NHS tests, and a review routine at collection. It costs time rather than money and it competes directly in the contest you can win.
