1. The Google Business Profile does not match how clients search
Primary category, secondary categories and the services section decide relevance. A profile that only says "accountant" with three vague service lines will lose to a rival that lists self assessment, limited company accounts, VAT returns, payroll and bookkeeping in the words clients type.
Inconsistent name, address or phone details across directories also split trust. Google is cautious with financial services. Messy citations make ranking harder and make searchers doubt they have found the right office.
2. There is no page for the search that matters
Google matches queries to pages. If self assessment, VAT or "accountant for contractors" only exist as bullets on a homepage, you are asking one thin URL to win contests it was never built for. Established local firms with dedicated pages will keep those positions until you give Google something clearer to rank.
3. Trust looks thinner than the firms above you
Accountancy sits in a high-trust category. Anonymous team copy, stock photos and no visible ACCA, ICAEW or CIMA letters lose to practices that show who signs the accounts and what qualifies them. Reviews that say "great service" help less than reviews that name the client type and the outcome.
If competitors have steadier review activity and you have a handful of old ones, prominence alone can keep you out of the map pack even when your website copy is better.
4. You are fighting the wrong battle
Trying to rank nationally for "online accountant" against funded brands is a different game from ranking locally for "accountant [town]" or a niche you already serve. Many practices feel they are "not ranking" when they are simply competing on the terms they cannot win yet, while leaving thinner local and niche contests untouched.
5. Conversion problems look like ranking problems
Sometimes you do appear, but the phone stays quiet. Slow mobile pages, buried contact details, or a site that never says who you help and where you work will waste the visibility you have. Check calls and form enquiries against impressions before assuming rankings alone are the gap.
How to diagnose it without guessing
Search your main services from a phone on mobile data, not from the office Wi-Fi, and compare the map pack and organic results against your profile and pages. Note categories, services, review freshness and whether rivals have niche pages you lack.
A free ranking audit from Azizi Technologies maps those gaps against the practices currently holding the top positions in your area, so the fix list is specific rather than generic SEO advice.
