Confirm how you are testing
Searching your practice name from the reception desk on the clinic wifi proves little. Your location and history personalise results. Test service-plus-town queries ("private dentist [town]", "emergency dentist [town]") from a phone on mobile data.
If you appear for your name but not for dentist or treatment searches, the profile exists and the problem is ranking eligibility or prominence, not a total disappearance.
Profile health: verification, suspension and categories
Unverified or suspended profiles can vanish from the places that matter. Check the Business Profile dashboard before editing anything else. Suspensions often follow guideline issues such as keyword-stuffed names or address problems.
Primary category should be the most accurate dental match, with secondary categories for services you truly offer. A vague or wrong category quietly removes you from searches you expect to win, even when the rest of the listing looks fine.
Reviews and trust for health searches
Patients choose dentists on trust, and Google weights review volume, rating, recency and responses. A large pile of old reviews with nothing recent loses to a smaller set of fresh, answered feedback.
Build a light, compliant post-appointment ask. Respond to every review factually. Do not buy reviews or run incentive schemes that break the rules. For dental sites, named clinicians and clear credentials on the website reinforce the same trust story.
Website and NAP consistency
If the site does not state that you are taking new patients, which treatments you offer, or which areas you serve, visitors bounce even when they find you. Thin treatment lists and buried phone numbers waste the visibility you do have.
Inconsistent name, address and phone details across directories and the profile reduce Google's confidence. Align the main listings with the exact details on your Google Business Profile and homepage footer.
Proximity versus a broken listing
You can rank well near the practice and fade across town without anything being "broken". That is proximity. Grid-based ranking checks show the difference between a healthy listing with a distance fade and a profile that is invisible next door.
Fix health and consistency first. Then improve prominence with reviews, citations and stronger treatment and location content. Random daily edits to core fields risk a review from Google and rarely fix distance on their own.
