Practice areas live on one vague services page
Google ranks specificity. "Family law solicitors in [town]", "probate solicitor near me" and "employment solicitor" need their own substantial pages: approach, process, FAQs, and who advises. A combined brochure page wins none of those queries cleanly.
If rivals have dedicated pages and you do not, you are invisible for the searches that produce instructions, even when your lawyers are excellent.
The Google Business Profile under-sells what you do
Missing secondary categories, an empty services list, no posts, and outdated photos all weaken relevance. Legal clients also notice whether the profile looks looked-after. Hours, phone number and appointment links should match the website exactly.
Multi-office firms that try to cover every location from one profile confuse proximity signals. Each genuine office usually needs correct, separate representation online.
Reviews are thin, old or mishandled
Legal buyers read reviews carefully. A firm with few recent reviews loses shortlists even when rankings are close. Asking is delicate: timing, matter type and confidentiality all matter, and some matters should never trigger a request. Still, having no compliant routine at all is how gaps open against firms that ask appropriately after suitable completions.
Unanswered reviews, especially critical ones, look worse than the criticism alone. Reply calmly, without revealing client details.
People and directories do not prove expertise
Legal advice sits in a high-trust category. Named solicitors with photos, qualifications, memberships and SRA details outperform anonymous firm branding. If expertise lives only in a PDF bios folder, Google and clients both struggle to verify it.
Law Society and other legal directory listings that disagree with your website on office name or phone split authority. Citation tidy-ups are unglamorous and often decisive.
How to find your real blocker
Search your main practice areas from a phone in private browsing, from more than one postcode in your catchment. Note whether you miss the map pack, organic results, or both. Compare the top three: page depth, solicitor visibility, review freshness and directory consistency.
Azizi Technologies runs that comparison in a free ranking audit and returns a plain priority list, so partners can fund the gap that is actually suppressing rankings rather than a generic package.
