Your Google Business Profile is incomplete or mis-set
Wrong primary category, empty services, no photos, ignored Q&A, and stale hours all tell Google you are less relevant than the electrician who filled these in carefully. Emergency hours only help if they are accurate; claiming 24-hour cover you do not offer damages trust when customers call.
Service-area businesses (most travelling electricians) need declared areas and a correctly hidden address under Google's rules. A common failure is treating the profile like a shopfront when you do not receive walk-ins, or declaring areas you never work, which dilutes relevance.
You have no page for the job people searched
"Emergency electrician", "EICR certificate", "fuse board replacement" and "EV charger installation" are different intents. A single homepage cannot rank and convert for all of them. Firms that dominate local packs almost always have separate, useful pages for the jobs that fill the diary.
If competitors have those pages and you do not, you are asking Google to invent relevance you never published.
Reviews are thin, old or too generic
Prominence on Maps leans heavily on review quantity, recency and specificity. "Great job, thanks" helps less than "Replaced our consumer unit in Hall Green, tidy and on time". An irregular ask-for-reviews habit lets rivals with a steady post-job routine pull ahead even when their work is no better.
Unanswered reviews also signal a neglected profile. Reply to every one, including the awkward ones, without arguing in public.
Citations and credentials are inconsistent
Name, address and phone that differ across directories confuse Google about which listing is yours. Trade directories, Facebook, your website footer and the profile should match to the letter. NICEIC, NAPIT or equivalent registration should be visible on the profile and site; customers will not shortlist an electrician whose certification takes five clicks to find.
Duplicate or suspended listings split reviews and rankings. If you have moved premises or changed phone numbers, old listings often still linger.
How to diagnose your real blocker
Check your profile on a phone from a few postcodes across your patch (or use a ranking grid). Note which searches you miss: brand, emergency, EICR, EV, rewires. Compare the top three rivals: categories, review freshness, service pages and citation consistency. The gap you see is usually the brief.
Azizi Technologies includes that grid comparison in a free ranking audit, so you leave with a plain-English list of what is blocking rankings rather than a generic sales pitch.
